Holding Cell

The holding cell is where our story will start.  If Maya files had feelings, this one would be really pissed.   This one has gone through the most changes, but I hope you agree, for the best.  Max did an excellent job modeling this one.   Every pipe, wire, etc was modeled with attention to detail and perfectly resembles the concept drawing (See Pre-Production Posts).  It was originally a bit narrower, but we decided to make it the same dimensions wide as it was tall.    Then it was originally textured as a “chrome” finish, but like the lair, it just felt too clean and happy.  Ryan was gracious enough to take on the task of texturing and lighting the model, and it turned out superb.   Here are some nice renders of it from a few different angles.   Tell us what you think.

Robot Lair

This is one of our environments.   I won’t go into the story part of it too much because I want the film to do the job of telling the story, but I will go into the evolution of this room.   It started as a very brightly lit room that was very clean and neat.   Ryan and I sat down and started to work through what this room represented and what emotion we wanted to convey when this was shown in the film.   We took into account the series of shots that came before this and how it would transition and it just didn’t make sense.   So we decided to darken it up a bit, add a bit of rust, dirt, scratches, etc.   Then to clutter it up.   It slowly evolved into Ryan’s masterpiece that you see before you today.  I think it will fit perfectly in the story.   Tell us what you think.   Click on the images for high res.

Here is a test render we did of it in motion.

G-XIII – The Final Model

Mr XIII himself.   The main character of our story.   He will get the most camera time so we needed to make sure he was up to the task.   He, like the War Machine, went through quite a few changes as time went by, but we think we have him ready for prime time.   It was always our intention to have a face behind his helmet so that presented a few hurtles that we had to overcome.   The shots of the face are going to be inside the hemet, which means his face will be covering the entire frame.   It might be ok in a small 21″ monitor, but when we blow it up on a movie theater screen that’s about 22 ft tall, it needs to hold its ground.   Eric has done a great job of adding a SSS shader to give it a realistic skin effect, as well as Shave & a Haircut eyebrows and lashes.   Every scratch, dimple, flaw was carefully drawn onto the mesh in Mudbox and I think he is also ready for his much awaited closeup.   Tell us what you think.   Click on the images for higher res.

War Machine

Here is our war machine in some nice high res renders. We wanted him to stay true to the script as much as possible but he went through a bit of changes. When Eric modeled him out, we started to notice that the “feet” weren’t going to work as they were first drawn out. He would quickly sink into the sand and would make it almost impossible for him to walk or run, which is required of him. The feet were redesigned to have a flat foot, which wil help distribute the weight evenly and reduce unnecessary difficulties in his walk. He is almost fully rigged and ready to be animated. Tell us what you think.  Click on thumbnails for full res images.
